Sarah Van Gorp on Mental Health Wellness & Awareness – With Trudy

We applaud Sarah for her leadership in paving the way to open up Mental Health Wellness conversations in our communities.

On this episode, Trudy Carlson and Sarah Van Gorp, a Refugee Family Wellness Supervisor at LSI shares an eye opening conversation on various topics as it relates to breaking the stigma surrounding the topic of mental health. Sarah provides additional insight on how we can broach the subject and essentially support each other as a society.

We cover topics such as:

  • Why it is important for us as a society to talk about mental health.
  • Debunk some common myths and misconceptions about mental health.
  • How everyone could help break the stigma.

We also learn how to better respond when someone approaches you regarding a situation they are going through but wants you to keep it a secret.

One message that Sarah shares, is that we cannot promise secrecy.

Instead we can say things like:

  • I care about you too much to keep this a secret.
  • You really need help and I am here to help you get it, when you are ready.
  • I am happy to listen to you, but there are people who are especially trained in what you are asking for and I want to help you connect with them.

Let’s continue having this conversations for as long as it takes. It starts with all of us.
